When we decide to go out to eat, I always look at the restaurant's menu nutrition information, most restaurants will have this available online. Some restaurants have items on the menu that sound healthy but are not because of the way they are prepared. It's always a good idea to make sure you're not consuming unnecessary calories, fat or carbs, restaurants love to add butter to everything from sauces to veggies, be careful so you can stay on your journey to healthy eating/lifestyle
Last night, my husband and I went out to eat. So as always, I visit the restaurant's website to check out the nutritional information. I found that they did have a few selected dinner entrees that can be prepared 500 calories or less at the customers request. I ordered a side salad with fat free dressing on the side, 5oz filet and (4) grilled shrimp with steamed broccoli, no butter. (If you order this the regular way they give you some kind of butter sauce and a baked potato). After watching my husband gorge himself with spinach artichoke dip, sweet bread and butter, he got his creamy potato soup and I got my side salad, which was very delicious. Then our main course comes and I noticed my streamed broccoli is glistening as if it has butter on it, also there is a little cup of some creamy buttery sauce. After doing so well not eating my husband appetizers I had to ask if my broccoli has butter on it and they assured me there wasn't. So I gave them back their cup of butter sauce and here is where some might think I'm a little crazy… I smell the broccoli to see for myself and just as I thought it had butter on it. (my husband even smelled it too and agreed with me.) When the server came back, I tell her that I do believe there is butter on it and ask for some more broccoli without butter. She does what I ask and brings be some non-buttered broccoli.

Thanks for your post Fitnesscraze! I am really very careful when I eat at restaurants because, like you, I know that lots of high fat sauces, butter and dressing can be added to a meal without your knowing and really sabotage a healthy eating lifestyle. People however can definitely eat out and eat yummy and healthy meals and enjoy the eating out experience. Your suggestions are great! I believe when people eat out they should not be bashful about specifying when ordering the healthy way they want their food prepared-for instance stating to grill or bake an entree instead of fry…or even requesting an entree be grilled dry-without extra sauces or butter. Also request salad with no dressing on it and get healthy low fat dressing on the side. I am a little odd when it comes to my salad dressing….I always put hot sauce on it…it is very low fat and has a tasty kick to it. Fitnesscraze-your suggestion of looking up restaurant menus before going out to eat is a great one. The more knowledge and preparation the better. Also, thanks for sharing your personal restaurant experience…I have to admit that your story provided great guidance ….and humor ! I wish you many healthy and happy restaurant experiences in the future!!!
